Harland’s Project:
Learning about the descendants of Harland’s herd.
I started this project as a fun birthday gift for Harland. With his herd down to just three aging horses, I thought it would be fun for him to learn more about the descendants of his beloved animals. Although Harland owned many more horses throughout his lifetime, I just researched his Paso Finos, the last 24 horses he owned in his 80+ years of life. Using the Paso Fino Horse Association database I reached out to more than 170 listed owners in hopes of finding photos and stories to share with Harland.
Through this project I learned so much and it really opened my eyes to the impact a breeder can have on the world. Harland was a hobbyist, of his 11 babies he only sold 4 and many of those horses that were sold he would have loved to have kept as well. Most of the breeding of his horses occurred prior to, or in some cases, after Harland’s ownership. From just 6 horses there are over 150 descendants and unconfirmed reports that there may be hundreds more abroad. I will continue to update this page as I find more information. Hermoso, Chestnut Paso Fino Gelding, DOB: 3 April 1974
Hermoso was purchased by Harland in 1987. He was a fairly hot horse, only ever used in for showing and around the farm. He lived out his days on the farm, passing in 1994, at 30 years old.

Rosita, Bay Paso Fino Mare, DOB: 11 September 1977.
Rosita was brought to the farm in 1987 where she would give birth to two wonderful colts. She was a bit of snake to handle, but her offspring were very sweet and reliable rides. She was sold in the early 90’s when Harland had to reduce his herd, it appears she lived a long and healthy life though as she passed in 2007 at 30 years old.

Petrusca, chestnut Paso Fino Mare. DOB: 6 January 1984
Harland purchased Petrusca in 1987 along with his other three broodmares. She was only three years old at the time and was just beginning work under saddle. An unfortunate accident left her with scar tissue around her hind hock and thus she was left to be broodmare and pasture pet to ensure her soundness. She was a spicy mare, nearly feral with newcomers as it took her a while to gain trust. However, once she was worked with regularly she was very intelligent and sweet. She lived her life at the farm until she passed suddenly overnight in her stall at the age of 28.

Dorado de Plebeyo del San, Bay Paso Fino Gelding DOB: 27 Jan 1988.
Dorado was being boarded by a close friend of Harland and he fell in love him immediately, purchasing him the same day they met. They’ve been best trail buddies ever since. As a son of the great sire Plebeyo, Dorado has an extremely smooth and even gait and a fantastic temperament under saddle. He’s extra grouchy in his old age, but he’s a strong-willed guy who loves to be dotted on.
